After trying to create the “perfect woman,” plastic surgeon Alex Simopoulos is now focusing on aborting their tiny babies.

I was astounded when I learned a few days ago that Bakersfield’s new abortionist is an infamous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. It just didn’t make sense to me. Why would a successful plastic surgeon (who is in the upper echelon of the medical profession) want to become an abortionist (the opposite extreme)?

With FPA abortion businesses now offering (seemingly) “legitimate” services like cosmetic surgery, I began to envision the day that we encounter pastor’s wives entering the abortion chamber, justifying themselves because they are not seeking abortions but seeking to enhance their beauty with plastic surgery. (It’s really not hard to imagine such a thing, having encountered countless pastors’ family members at abortion chambers over the years.)

But as I learned about Alex Simopoulos and his blatant disrespect for women (which even offends many who seem to have little or no moral foundation), various scriptural themes began to come to mind. I began to realize that abortion and plastic surgery are both about self-worship (narcissism): making “self” (and sex) an idol instead of worshiping the Creator. (I don’t doubt that there are some legitimate uses of plastic surgery, when a surgeon seeks to restore what was someone’s normal appearance after a tragedy. But what I write here is intended to relate only to the kind of plastic surgery where someone attempts to redefine themselves.)

A glance in the mirror is all it takes for most people to acknowledge that they are not perfect. Messy hair or dirty faces can be easily fixed, but when we begin to seek a different kind of face (or body), we begin to fall into the devil’s trap.

When women are entering abortion chambers, we often warn them not to fall into the devil’s trap, reminding them that the devil comes to “steal, kill and destroy” but that Jesus came to give them (and their babies) life. Looking in the faces of the women as they exit the abortion chamber with empty, aching wombs, it is not hard to see that they realize that they were duped.

Many celebrities have become caricatures of their former selves after plastic surgery (Michael Jackson of course comes to mind). When they began using plastic surgery, they thought they were improving their appearance, but the devil tricked them — just like the devil tricks women into aborting their babies. When someone has excessive plastic surgery, what becomes most obvious is that they are mentally ill (and spiritually depraved).

Covetousness is a major sin: one of the Ten Commandments focuses on it. It’s really not ok to wish you had someone else’s nose, or chest, or other body parts.

Contentment is one of the keys to living a successful Christian life (1 Timothy 6:6). Each of us must be content with the bodies God has given us (including the gender God chose to give us). If not, we fall into the devil’s trap. Of course, we must also be content with (and grateful for) every child God gives us.

Being content with our imperfect bodies requires humility. But humility is another key to living a successful Christian life (James 4:6). The Apostle Paul wanted to get rid of his “thorn in the flesh,” but God did not remove it, because God didn’t want him to become proud.

The proud person who seeks to recreate themselves (or others) through plastic surgery is first and foremost rebelling against God, who created them. Abortion and plastic surgery are both a part of the spiritual tailspin documented in Romans 1, worshiping the creature rather than the Creator. Through Abortionist Alex Simopoulos, it seems that God may be giving our community over to the depravity we have chosen through abortion (and we can only expect things to get much worse very quickly if we don’t soften our hearts).

Jesus said that if we want to follow Him, we must take up our cross daily and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). Our imperfections are part of our “cross,” the suffering we must bear. Christian women in particular must focus on inner beauty, not outer beauty (Proverbs 31:30, 1 Peter 3:3-4), even if they find it painful to look in the mirror. Meanwhile, Christian men should be satisfied with their wives’ breasts (Proverbs 5:19).

The procedures Simopoulos promotes focus on sexual gratification, and from Simopoulous’ television appearances, it is obvious that he has no boundaries. Pursuit of sexual pleasure without boundaries leads to abortion (and there is reason to believe that abortions may also contribute to some of the “cosmetic surgery” procedures Simopoulos offers — I may have more to say about that later).
