Created to Serve
Copyright 1985 by Tim and Terri Palmquist
MIDI music file for this song.

Groom:
I love you
My heart pounds with the desire to be close to you
Yet sometimes my selfishness holds me back...

For the rest of my life I am yours
I will care for you and cherish you
Even when you are weak
I want you to become who God wants you to be
So I'll serve you just as Christ served me

For I was created to serve
Created to love
Created to give as God so freely gives to us
So how could I hold anything back?
That would only drag us down
I am created to live as your servant

Bride:
For the rest of my life I am yours
With God's help I will submit to you
As unto the Lord
I want you to become who God wants you to be
So I'll serve you just as Christ served me

For I was created to serve
Created to love
Created to give as God so freely gives to us
So how could I hold anything back?
That would only drag us down
I am created to live as your servant

Together:
All I have is yours
All you have is mine
All we have is His to the end of time

For the rest of our lives we are yours
We would never want to love each other
More than we love You
Together we can serve You so much better than before
If we place our trust in You
In everything we do
As we make our life a sacrifice to You

For we are created to serve
Created to love
Created to give as God so freely gives to us
So how could we hold anything back?
That would only drag us down
We are created to live as your servant

Our hearts pound with the desire
To be close to you
We love you

Comments from Tim (4/28/2001):
We wrote this song just a few days before our wedding on April 28, 1985. We asked Ivan and Joan Goertzen to sing it (having been blessed to grow up hearing their duets in church services for many years), and even though they didn't have much time to learn it, Ivan and Joan agreed.

When we wrote this song (and prepared the rest of our wedding service), we thought we were proclaiming some great message about Christian marriage to those who were attending our wedding. Over time, we realized that God intended the primary recipients for the message of this song to be ourselves.

After sixteen years of marriage, we cannot claim that we have lived up to the ideals expressed in this song, but this song (and the rest of our wedding) serves as a frequent challenge to us to submit to God so that we can "become who God wants us to be," both as individuals, as a couple, and as a family.
