Comments from Tim (4/28/2001):
We wrote this song just a few days before
our wedding on April 28, 1985.
We asked Ivan and Joan Goertzen to sing it (having been blessed to grow
up hearing their duets in church services for many years),
and even though they didn't have
much time to learn it, Ivan and Joan agreed.
When we wrote this song (and prepared the rest of our wedding service),
we thought we were proclaiming some great message about Christian marriage
to those who were attending our wedding. Over time, we realized that God
intended the primary recipients for the message of this song to be ourselves.
After sixteen years of marriage,
we cannot claim that we have lived up to the ideals expressed in this song,
but this song (and the rest of our wedding) serves as a frequent
challenge to us to submit to God so that we can "become who God wants us
to be," both as individuals, as a couple, and as a family.
